Sudan Humanitarian Preparedness and Response (SHPR)

Sudan’s Humanitarian Preparedness and Response will contribute to reducing excess mortality and morbidity resulting from conflict, climate related hazards, disease outbreaks and economic shocks by: 1. Providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable people facing ongoing crisis, with a focus on protection services, cash transfers and community management of acute malnutrition. 2. Preparing for and responding to sudden crises and spikes in need through country-based contingency funds. A flexible internal crisis risk facility will strengthen UK preparedness to respond to major disasters in Sudan. 3. Strengthening the effectiveness of in-country humanitarian preparedness and response. A flexible Enabling Facility will provide third-party services and technical assistance to improve gathering and analysis of data on risks and needs and early warning systems, monitoring and accountability mechanisms, and a shift to locally led interventions.

The Sudan Independent Monitoring and Analysis Programme (SIMAP) aims to strengthen the effectiveness of the UK’s policy and programme portfolio in Sudan through providing timely, objective information on delivery and contextual developments to inform decision-making in a fluid operating environment. The programme is delivered through a commercial supplier, Oxford Policy Management (OPM), deploying a team of thematic and contextual experts to undertake activities to deliver across four workstreams: 1) Third party monitoring and Primary data gathering; 2) Strategic Evidence & Learning; 3) Research and Analysis; 4) BOS programme support
Combatting International Illicit Finance: Accelerating the 2030 Agenda

Combatting International Illicit Finance: Accelerating the 2030 Agenda will enhance the UK’s capability to combat illicit finance (IF) through: (1) a new UK International Centre of Expertise on Illicit Finance (ICE) to improve our international understanding, preparedness and response to IF threats and vulnerabilities by drawing on UK expertise across law enforcement, HMG, academia, civil society, and the private sector; and (2) a strengthened network of UK experts in key jurisdictions and multilateral bodies to build our partners’ resilience to IF and tackle shared challenges.
Global Mine Action Programme 3

The UK has had an historic role in talking the legacy of landmine and Explosive Remnants of War. We were one of the founding signatories to the Land Mine Ban Treaty of 1997, In the 24 years since then, the UK has supported some of the poorest countries around the world to clear landmines and ERW after conflict, building up considerable knowledge and experience in the mine action sector. UK funding for mine action saves lives, releases land for productive use and helps pace the way for further development programming. Through land mine and ERW clearance, mine risk education activities and capacity development of national and provincial authorities this programme will increase stability and security for people in countries affected by landmines and ERW.
Royal Academy of Engineering Core - Frontiers of Engineering for Development

Frontiers of Engineering for Development is a series of interdisciplinary symposia that facilitates national and international collaboration to tackle global development challenges. The event brings together a select group of around 60 emerging UK and global engineering and international development leaders from industry and academia to discuss pioneering technical work and cutting-edge research for international development from a diversity of engineering fields. Seed funding is available to progress some of the best ideas coming out of the event. COVID-19
SFC - GCRF QR funding

Formula GCRF funding to the Scottish Funding Council to support Scottish higher education institutes (HEIs) to carry out ODA-eligible activities in line with their three-year institutional strategies. ODA research grants do not represent the full economic cost of research and therefore additional funding is provided to Scottish HEIs in proportion to their Research Excellence Grant (REG). In FY19/20 funding was allocated to 18 Scottish higher education institutes to support existing ODA grant funding and small projects. GCRF has now supported more than 800 projects at Scottish institutions, involving over 80 developing country partners.

DfE NI - GCRF QR funding

Grant to Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland to enable Northern Irish higher education institutes to carry out pre-agreed ODA-eligible activities in line with their institutional strategies. For Queen’s University Belfast in FY2019/20 this included: workshops in Cambodia, Vietnam, South Africa, and Uganda about health and education; 11 pilot projects spanning 16 eligible countries (Angola, Burundi, China, Colombia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe); and additional support to GCRF and NF-funded activities. For Ulster University in FY2019/20 funding supported six pump-priming projects on: LMIC maternal, neonatal and child health; PTSD in Rwanda; Decision-Making in Policy Making in Africa and Central Asia; and hearing impairment and dementia in China.
HEFCW - GCRF QR funding

Additional GCRF funding to the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales to support Welsh higher education institutes (HEIs) to carry out ODA-eligible activities in line with their institutional strategies. ODA research grants do not represent the full economic cost of research and therefore additional funding is provided to Welsh HEIs in line with their research council grant income. In FY19/20 funding was allocated to Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff University and Swansea University. In FY19/20, the funding was used to fund: the full economic cost of existing ODA eligible activities (e.g. already funded by GCRF); small ODA-eligible projects; fellowships to ODA-eligible researchers; and to increase collaboration and impact. 53 ODA-eligible countries have been reported as benefiting from the funded work, with Brazil and India the most frequently mentioned. By region, the largest number of projects were based in the LDC’s (Least Developed Countries) in Asia, South America, and East Africa, with only a few projects in the middle-income countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia.

Sudan Free of Female Genital Mutilation Phase 2 (SFFGM2)

To decrease the prevalence of Female Genital Cutting in Sudan and open space for wider programme on gender equality, supoorting SDG5. The programme will change social norms in target communities and at scale, support an improved legal environment, strengthen systems combatting FGM and other harmful practices, and catalyse a wider response to gender equality in Sudan. Primary beneficiaries will be girls and women in target communities, locations and states in Sudan.

HOPE-S, Healing, Outreach, Protection, Empowerment

HOPE-S is a five-year UK-funded programme designed to address the widespread gender-based violence (GBV) and conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in Sudan’s conflict-affected areas. Building on two decades of UK partnerships with civil society, the programme will deliver a holistic response that combines survivor-centred services, social norm transformation, and locally led risk mitigation. It aims to strengthen women-led organisations and grassroots actors through flexible funding and technical support, improve access to essential health and psychosocial services, and reduce stigma and harmful practices that perpetuate violence. By empowering communities, supporting reintegration of survivors, and tackling root causes of GBV, HOPE-S contributes to Sudan’s long-term resilience and aligns with UK priorities on Women, Peace and Security and the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative.
