Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG)

National Governance Programme

The National Governance Programme aims to support Pakistan’s national level institutional reforms agenda through this programme. The programme will take a whole-of-government approach to addressing coordination deficits between levels of government in Pakistan. This means providing technical assistance to the Prime Minister’s Office to focus political leadership on prioritised policy areas; ensuring decisions are evidence-based and are supported by effective monitoring frameworks and feedback loops, supporting collective problem through support to coordination bodies like the Council of Common Interest, and working on policy issues such as climate change or social protection where there is appetite for coordination and reform.

Security and Justice Programme 2

Security and Justice Programme (SJP) ultimately aims to help to enhance public safety in Nepal and improve people’s trust in a key institution: the police. It will contribute to increased responsiveness of security and justice providers, particularly gender-based violence (GBV) and increased prevention of GBV and wider public safety problems. Understanding and influencing different social and organisational norms will run through the whole programme to address the prevalence of violence against women and girls. The programme also has a particular focus on the organisational development of the Nepal Police, investigation capability, problem-solving community policing and better climate-resilient solar-powered infrastructure for service delivery, notably police women and children service centres (WCSCs).

Security and Stabilisation Programme

This programme will increase UK effectiveness in preventing or reducing conflict through the application of stabilisation and security sector reform (SSR) best practice. This includes developing international expertise on state reconstruction in conflict-affected countries. We will develop and advocate for the UK’s governance and human rights-centred approach on stabilisation, SSR, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR), sharing our outputs with the international community for the benefit of those living in conflict-affected countries. We will update the UK Guide to Stabilisation, which provides thought leadership and practical advice for the international community. Our priority countries benefiting from this work will be ODA recipients. The Programme will support our Integrated Review objectives of reducing the frequency and intensity of conflict and instability and minimising opportunities for state and non-state actors to undermine international security.

Corridors for Growth

To increase Tanzania’s infrastructure for trade in three ways (i) Co-financing the Dar Port expansion together with the World Bank and Tanzania Port Authority will double port capacity and enable Tanzania’s entire trade volume to increase by two thirds. (ii) Project preparation funding for six more major regional transport projects are expected to catalyse up to £600m of development finance incorporating climate resilent design. (iii) Launching a new approach to Public-Private Partnerships will improve infrastructure in municipal areas and build capacity for larger PPP’s in the future.The programme is expected to reduce the costs of doing business in Tanzania, contributing to growth, more jobs and lower poverty. The short-term beneficiaries will be users such as traders, logistics providers and public citizens. International business including from the UK will benefit from better access to trade.In the medium to long run employment is expected to increase from indirect effects.
