Building Local Resilience in Syria (BLRS)

The Building Local Resilience in Syria (BLRS) programme will take an integrated approach to help Syrians in need to feed themselves and their families. It will help around 65,000 Syrians in need per year to be less reliant on harmful coping behaviours (like skipping meals, child labour, or recruitment to violent and extremist groups) and less dependent on emergency aid, and to be more self-reliant and more economically and socially resilient to shocks and stresses. It will deliver interventions at local level, and particularly target women, young people, and those with disabilities, whom we know are especially vulnerable in the various Syria contexts.

Building Resilience and adapting to climate change in Malawi

This programme aims to strengthen the resilience of poor households in Malawi to withstand current and projected weather and climate-related shocks and stresses. This will in turn halt the annual cycle of humanitarian crises that blights people’s lives, harms poverty reduction efforts and swallows up resources. The UK will invest up to £90.5 million over eight years [2018-2026] to provide direct benefits to 1.7 million poor and vulnerable people in Malawi [approximately 300,000 households].The programme also supports environmental and resilience outcomes through reducing deforestation directly and indirectly.

Zimbabwe Humanitarian and Resilience Programme (ZHARP) 2019-25

This programme will provide a monthly unconditional cash transfer of USD $13 to at least 11,000 people with very high levels of food insecurity in urban areas. Each person (up to 5 in one family) will receive the transfer for a minimum period of 9 months, allowing them to purchase basic food stuffs and try to avoid resorting to damaging coping strategies during the peak lean season. In addition, the programme will work on synergies with WFP and other donors to pilot approaches to building the resilience of vulnerable urban populations to economic and climatic shocks. WFP will also further develop and mainstream the Toose GBV approach in a form that can be added or ‘layered’ onto WFP assistance programmes across Zimbabwe and potentially globally.

The UK’s contribution to the Facility for Refugees in Turkey, FRIT 2
