Plant rejuvenation for climate change adaptation in the SVG Botanical Garden

IATI Identifier: GB-GOV-1-400793-402

Description

The project is aimed at increasing the resilience of plants in the SVG Botanical Garden to mitigate the impact of climate change. Over the last 3 years the plants in the Garden have been negatively impacted by the extreme heat. This has resulted in the loss of some plants and the stagnated growth of others particularly that of seedlings in the nursery. The project activities will seek to undertake replanting of sessions of the landscape in the garden through procurement of plants and propagation of seedlings. The project will also enhance the plant care routine by increasing the knowledge and skills of the staff through training. An irrigation system will be used to improve the consistency of the water supply to plants. The system will enhance the sustainability of the Botanical Garden nursery to consistently propagate plants throughout the year. This is a critical part of the institutional history of the Botanical Garden as a plant conservatory. Additionally, the plant information signs will enhance the education of students and visitors doing tours in the Botanical Garden.
