Description

The nexus between climate change, environmental degradation, human mobility, and security represents a growing concern within Iraq, and there are only a few integrated interventions to address these growing issues. Building off of the results of the pilot project (Phase I) conducted within the Kurdish Region of Iraq (KRI) related to creating and providing access to comprehensive data related to climate-induced mobility, and support to communities impacted by climate change, this Phase II aims to continue addressing the complex and interrelated challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, conflict and displacement in Iraq. It seeks to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities and institutions by strengthening their capacities to manage climate-fragility risks, promoting sustainable natural resource management, and facilitating dialogue and cooperation on environmental issues. This will also be done by infrastructure and rehabilitation projects to build resilience to climate-related risks and livelihoods assistance for community members who have or could be impacted by the effects of climate change. Lastly, the activities proposed under this Phase II also aim to support the generation and dissemination of evidence and knowledge on the linkages between climate change, environment, peace and security in Iraq, and advocates for the integration of climate-fragility considerations into national and sub-national policies and plans.
