UNHCR operation in Kenya (2023)
Project disclaimer
Description
As of 31 December 2021, Kenya hosts over 540,000 refugees and asylum-seekers mainly living in the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps as well as urban areas, including the capital, Nairobi. Women and children make up 77% of the refugees and asylum seekers. Kenya has also identified some 18,500 stateless persons in the country. Despite progress towards comprehensive solutions, new refugee arrivals and new birth registrations have led to a gradual increase in the overall population in the camps. The Covid-19 pandemic also affected the voluntary repatriation programme to Somalia, Ethiopia and Burundi through small-scale repatriation to Somalia and Burundi resumed in 2021. As requested by the Government of Kenya in 2021, UNHCR developed a six-pillar joint Roadmap for Solutions and continues to advocate and work with the Government to ensure that refugees and asylum-seekers in Kenya have access to both protection and solutions.
