IDRC, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office have agreed to new partnerships in support of the Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI). These partnerships will deepen and extend the work of the SGCI, including in the key cross-cutting thematic area of gender equality and inclusivity. This project will strengthen gender equality and inclusivity concepts and practices across the science granting councils’ grant-making cycles using an integrated approach that is co-designed and co-implemented with the councils. The project aims to increase both the integration of gender equality and inclusivity in the work of the councils and the participation and leadership roles for women in research, development and innovation. It will be implemented over 33 months by a consortium that comprises the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa, Portia, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa and Jive Media Africa. The Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI) is a multi-donor Initiative funded by IDRC, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, South Africa’s National Research Foundation, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the German Research Foundation. Since its inception in 2015, the Initiative has been strengthening the capacities of science granting councils in sub-Saharan African countries to support research and evidence-based policies that will contribute to economic and social development.
