Weather and Climate Science for Service Partnership (WCSSP) South Africa - Calls- tender-UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Project disclaimer
Description
Developing advanced wind farm parameterisation in the Unified Model Currently, the Met Office’s Unified Model (UM) is unable to reliably predict the impact of wind farms on the atmosphere, most importantly the reduction of wind speed within and downstream of the farms. This means that we are unable to quantify not only the effects of large-scale deployment of wind farms on the weather and climate, but also the amount of “extractable” wind power resources in a region of interest. In this 4-month project, we will aim to develop and implement a new WFP based on the latest theory of wind farm aerodynamics, called the two-scale momentum theory.
