Description

MRC ARL award to investigate the effects of a remote GI bacterial infection on Female reproductive tract immunity, how this affects control of common Sexual Transmitted Infections, as well as the effects on fertility

Objectives

The importance of the proposed project is investigating how infection in one biological compartment (for example, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract), can distally affect immunity in the female reproductive tract (FRT) and the consequences of this on FRT health. In this study, I will investigate the distal effects of GI bacterial infections on FRT immune homeostasis, by identifying and testing: (1) how does local GI and disseminating bacterial infection distally alters immunity in the upper and lower compartments of the FRT; (2) how bacterial pathogenesis and host immune responses contribute to these distal effects; (3) the consequences of these distal effects on susceptibility to infection e.g., HSV-2 (lower FRT) and Chlamydia (upper FRT); (4) the impact of GI bacterial infection (local and disseminated) on aspects of fertility. Together, these objectives will provide a framework to discover and understand how distal bacterial infections influence FRT immunity, susceptibility to infection and fertility.
