Overseas Territories Climate Security Programme
Description
Climate change is an urgent, chronic and existential risk, which is already materialising and is expected to worsen. The vulnerability of the OTs is well recognised, with high dependence on fragile natural resources, narrow economic bases, high exposure to climate risks such as cyclones, drought, extreme heat, flooding and sea-level rise, and limited institutional capacity to build resilience to climate change. These risks have the following key impacts that could increase instability in the OTs: food security, water security, energy security, disaster response. Without targeted support to mitigate the security risks related to climate change and increase resilience, the OTs will be impacted with potentially damaging results to UK national interests. The programme aims to support the OTs to further identify and respond to key issues impacting security, resilience, and stability, and take ownership to prioritise, address climate change risks, build resilience and increase security.
