Nutritious Food Systems: equitable science partnership to strengthen nutrition for women and girls
Description
Ending hunger and malnutrition are pressing global challenges. Last year, an estimated 60 million children suffered from acute malnutrition. Malnutrition is a leading cause of disease and death, especially among women and children, and a key barrier to poverty reduction and prosperity. In 2021, 42% of the world’s population could not afford a healthy diet. Around 900 million face severe food insecurity. Climate, conflict and economic shocks threaten food production and access to nutritious food. Simultaneously, agriculture contributes to climate change and biodiversity loss. If these trends persist, SDG2 on ending hunger and malnutrition and global goals to tackle climate change will not be achieved. Improving nutrition despite growing pressures on, the food system calls for evidence-based, cost-effective and policy-driven innovations. This programme with BMGF, builds on 10 years of co-funded research to strengthen nutritious food systems.
