Description

This project will reduce under-five mortality by reducing diarrhoea prevalence through improving sanitation coverage and hygiene practices for the entire population of 3 rural Local Government Areas (LGA) in Cross River State, Nigeria. Combining behaviour change through CLTS and hygiene promotion, 702,000 people will benefit from open defecation free environments which will decrease under-five diarrhoea rates by 10% and contribute to reductions in under-five mortality.

Target Groups

This project will eliminate open defecation and significantly improve hygiene behaviour for all 541 rural communities in target LGAs (including remote communities). This will impact approximately 91,300 under-fives vulnerable to deadly diarrhoeal diseases transmitted by inadequate sanitation and hygiene. This project will further benefit approximately 351,000 women and girls whose lack of sanitation access means disproportionate time and resource expenditures, physical insecurity, and feelings of indignity. Vulnerable sub-groups areas, such as female headed households, widows, the elderly, and people living with disabilities and HIV/AIDS, will also direct beneficiaries (section 4.9) with their numbers to be confirmed by the project?s baseline survey. In total, all 702,000 people estimated to be living in target LGAs will realise the health benefits of full sanitation coverage and improved hygiene behaviour within the timeframe of the project.1
