Description

Hurricane Irma was a hurricane category 5 the highest category storm which brought severe damage to a number of islands in the Caribbean. Irma had sustained wind speeds reaching close to 295 km per hour the highest on record in the Atlantic Ocean (outside of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sea). The hurricane has severely affected St Martin Barbuda Anguilla British Virgin Islands (BVI) Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Cuba and Florida. Reports as at 11/09/17 suggest approximately 20 people have been killed in total including 7 in BVI and 1 in Anguilla. Approximately 1.2 million people have been affected so far but this could rise to up to 26 million. The British Red Cross has so far sent NFIs to TCI and Anguilla sent six delegates (3 x needs assessment 3 x technical specialists) launched a BRC emergency fundraising appeal and submitted a Disaster Fund application worth 155K. Further delegate support for example Logistics ERU is being considered (11/09). A joint IFRC appeal has been launched for Antigua & Barbuda and St Kitts and Nevis (CHF 1.1m) Dominican Republic (CHF 300K) and Haiti (CHF 300K) have had DREF operations launched. Anguilla Red Cross RC office building as well as warehouse and relief stock has all been destroyed. ARC is operating from the Government Emergency Operations Centre and is attempting to carry out assessments and relief activities. Island airport getting back up and running. BVI Red Cross RC building suffered severe destruction and DM capacity is extremely low. The team is working out of the hospital. Severe damage to the island. TCI Red Cross Relatively well-prepared with trained staff and volunteers and some pre-positioned stock (request for more included in this application). Widespread damage to the island.
