Description

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation - Minciencias has been a key in-country partner under the Newton-Caldas Fund since it started in Colombia in 2014. During the last four years, the main focus of work has been their Colombia Bio strategic project which seeks to promote knowledge, conservation, management and sustainable use of biodiversity through programmes and projects between Colombia and the United Kingdom that favour the sustainable and socially inclusive development of Colombia's bio-economy. This year, two programmes are being delivered: Institutional Links (joint research projects) and Professional Development & Engagement with the Useful Plants and Fungi of Colombia project.

Objectives

To co-direct projects to: 1. document and broadly disseminate knowledge on the useful plants and fungi of Colombia with the ultimate goal of developing pathways to enhance nature’s contribution to people in this country. 2. foster joint technological research and development projects aimed at the functional validation and technical and scientific demonstration of new technological concepts based on the sustainable exploitation of biodiversity.

Other

Minciencias has been the principal in-country partner for the Newton Caldas Fund mainly under their strategic Colombia Bio project. Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has been instrumental in the delivery of a great percentage of the Colombia Bio work through the British Council since 2017. University of York, Earlham Institute, University of Bath, Queen Mary University of London, University of Nottingham, Imperial College London, National Institute of Agricultural Botany – NIAB, University of Sheffield, University of Southampton are working with their Colombian peers in projects intended to contribute to the development of a sustainable bioeconomy in Colombia.
