Description

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a UK Government funded programme providing volunteer placements to 18-25 year olds and Team Leader placements to 23-35 year olds. Raleigh's ICS programme is currently being delivered in Tanzania and Nepal, where Water, Sanitation & Hygiene and Livelihoods projects are reaching some of the most marginalised communities.

Objectives

WASH Strategic Goal: Improved quality of life for 75,000 people through sustainably managed WASH by 2020 (linked to SDG 6) * Increased access to safe drinking water - Building / restoring infrastructure (water systems, tanks, piping, taps) * Increased access to sanitation and hygiene infrastructure Installing / repairing sanitation facilities - Supporting youth as WASH entrepreneurs to provide low cost and safe WASH inputs * Increased practice of safe WASH behaviours - Improving knowledge of WASH behaviours that can keep people safe from water-borne illness. Applying the principles of behavioural science to awareness campaigns, training sessions, ‘nudge’ murals and signage * Improved local sustainable governance, management and maintenance of WASH infrastructure - Empowering communities to engage in the management of their local WASH Nepal Project name - Inspiring Youth through Active Citizenship (INSAC) Partners - Rural Awareness & Development Organisation (RADO); Women, Children & Environment Development Centre (WOCHEND); Shree Swanra Integrated Development Centre (SSICDC) Location - Makwanpur and Gorkha Districts Overview - Programming focusses on earthquake-affected communities and delivers: • increased access to improved WASH facilities • increased knowledge and skills on managing and maintaining WASH facilities (alongside Water User Committees) • improved knowledge and practice of effective hygiene and sanitation behaviours Tanzania Project name - Youth-led School Sanitation & Hygiene (YoSSH) Partners - Kilombero and Myomero District Councils Location - Dodoma and Morogoro Regions Overview - Programming focuses on safe sanitation and hygiene in schools (SWASH) and delivers: • increased access to improved (gender-specific) WASH facilities in schools • increased knowledge and skills on managing and maintaining WASH facilities (alongside School Management Committees) • improved knowledge and practice of effective hygiene and sanitation behaviours by pupils and, more widely, their families • establishment and support of SWASH clubs Livelihoods Strategic Goal: Sustained, full, productive and decent work for 10,000 youth by 2020 (linked primarily to SDGs 4 and 8) * Increased number of successful youth-led enterprises - Training young people to build the skills, confidence and motivation needed to develop and deliver viable business ideas, Helping entrepreneurs to access finance and mentoring support, Increasing community support for young entrepreneurs Nepal Project name - Inspiring Youth through Active Citizenship (INSAC) Partners - Rural Awareness & Development Organisation (RADO); Women, Children & Environment Development Centre (WOCHEND); Shree Swanra Integrated Development Centre (SSICDC) Location - Makwanpur and Gorkha Districts Overview - Programming focusses creating resilience to adverse conditions and mitigating the impact of climate change in rural communities through: • delivering training on high value / off season vegetable production • supporting livelihoods diversification and building business skills • supporting small businesses or income-generation activities (IGAs) • raising awareness on adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change Tanzania Project name - Youth 4 Sustainable Livelihoods (Y4SL) Partners - Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG), Agronomos Sin Fronteras (ASF) Location - Kilosa District (Morogoro), Mufindi District (Iringa) Overview - Programming takes a mixed livelihoods approach and focusses on: • training young people in the business model canvas (BMC) approach • supporting the development of business ideas and plans • supporting access to financing to fund the establishment or growth of micro-enterprises
