Global Guinea Worm Disease Eradication Programme
Description
The UK will provide £4.5m to the Guinea Worm Eradication Programme to coordinate efforts to control and eradicate Guinea Worm Disease. The Carter Center, in conjunction with WHO, lead the GWEP. DFID funds will contribute towards work in all endemic countries such as surveillance, containment of cases and dissemination of information. By the end of the programe results will include: Guinea worm cases expected to have reduced to 8, endemic villages expected to have reduced to 15, surveillance systems covering approximately 6000 villages in the remaining endemic countries, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya expected to submit documentation demonstrating absence of Guinea Worm Disease.
