Malawi Rural Roads Improvement Programme
Description
To upgrade 149 kms of rural unpaved roads in 5 districts of rural Malawi which will benefit up to 158,000 farming families. Improved transport will provide inhabitants of these districts with access to markets, health and other services. A total of 45 kms of rural roads in the beneficiary districts will by 2015 be re-habilitated and upgraded while a further 104 kms of rural roads will be made passable all year-round by occassional spot improvements. The programme also expects by 2015 for (a) 10% of land to be planted to cash crops; (b) 10% improvement for women to access better health care and (c) 830,000 days of work opportunities in improving roads. The programme will close by December 2015
