Improved Waste Management in Bo, Makeni and Kenema
Project disclaimer
Description
Since the Ebola crisis, everyone in Sierra Leone now recognises that better hygiene and a healthier environment are essential to prevent more epidemics. Unauthorised dumping sites and illegal waste disposal spread illnesses, so Welthungerhilfe is helping the government to develop an infrastructure for municipal waste collection. Sierra Leone's private sector is underdeveloped so it is expected to participate in providing public services and is also involved in this project. At the same time, jobs are being created for the country’s numerous unemployed young people. Awareness of waste reduction, separation and recycling is also being raised by various means such as through schools.
Objectives
To enhance the capacity of Bo and Makeni City Councils as well as of private sector actors through promotion of Integrated Waste Management Programs to improve on environmental sanitation and socio-economic conditions in secondary towns of Sierra Leone
Target Groups
Main direct beneficiaries will be the City Council Administrations, line ministries (e.g. Ministry of Health & Sanitation (MoHS), Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)), Waste Stakeholder Committees and working groups, small and medium sized enterprises and informal waste workers. In total about 300 persons. Indirect beneficiaries are all 312,000 residents of Bo (200.000) and Makeni (112.000) towns when project is in full swing.
