Supporting Environmentally-friendly Mineral Extraction and Sustainable Trade in Agriculture (SEMESTA)
UK - Foreign, Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO)
Indonesia is making efforts to decouple commodity production from deforestation, most successfully in the timber sector with its timber legality system (SVLK). A similar approach is in train with Indonesia’s palm oil standard, Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO). Learning from the timber experience, the programme will support Indonesia’s sustainable commodities production, including for exports to the UK. SEMESTA will address concerns that undermine sustainability, including upgrading ISPO by establishing a licensing unit and supporting the merger of regulations and to establish national system for other strategic commodities, including nickel. The programme will also support further necessary strengthening of SVLK, including on geolocation.
Ensuring Minerals Enable Responsible Growth and Economic Development (EMERGE)
UK - Foreign, Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO)
This programme will spend up to £3.015 million over two years (Sept 2024- Sept 26) to support a stable, secure and equitable scale up of critical mineral production, accelerate the availability of and more equitable access to affordable clean energy technologies, and spur sustainable and inclusive economic growth and development for Africa’s citizens. The programme renews an effective partnership with the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) and their efforts with citizens and governments in four resource-rich African countries to ensure responsible governance of minerals. This will be achieved by supporting the development of value addition opportunities; enhancing revenue mobilisation; empowering effective oversight; and improving international standards and anti-corruption efforts.
