International Health Regulations (IHR) Strengthening project
UK - Department of Health (DH)
The project enables scientific and technical capability to be mobilised for increased international engagement, significantly scaling up UK capacity to respond to WHO and country demand for support on IHR. This will enhance global, and country level health security and strengthen UK preparedness and capacity to respond to future threats. The project works to build technical capability, strengthen leadership, and develop sustainable public health systems through provision of technical expertise to support and enhance WHO’s IHR strengthening efforts globally, particularly with Joint External Evaluation and National Action Planning activities. It does this through developing trusted institutional linkages, building long term partnerships and professional relationships at country and regional level. The project works at national level in partnerships with NPHIs and Health Ministries, providing targeted support to 4 countries (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Zambia). At a regional level the project works with bodies such as Africa CDC and the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET) as well as WHO regional offices. Through regional support, technical expertise will extend global health security capacity building to reach countries that may otherwise be neglected in terms of donor support. This will strengthen regional resilience networks for prevention, detection and response to future outbreaks.
