Generating Sustainable Livelihoods and Leadership for Peace in South Sudan

Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD)

This five-year project (September 2016 – August 2021) titled ‘Generating Sustainable Livelihoods and Leadership for Peace in South Sudan’ will be implemented in South Sudan by a consortium of three organisations: the Agency for Co-operation and Research in Development (ACORD), DanChurchAid (DCA), and the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR). The project has a budget allocation of 8.2 million Euros from the Addressing Root Causes (ARC) Fund of the Netherlands Government. Four major inter-related causes of conflict and instability have been identified by this consortium, which will be addressed through this project: food insecurity; disengagement of youth; tensions and mistrust; and a lack of effective conflict resolution mechanisms. In response to these root causes of instability in Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, and Jonglei states, this consortium will build on the complementary strengths, knowledge, and expertise of its three members. By pooling resources and expertise, the project will leverage individual strengths such as: ACORD’s expertise in conflict transformation at community level, food security, livelihoods and water resource management programming in Central and Eastern Equatoria; DCA’s experience in resilience and disaster risk reduction, food security, livelihoods programming, humanitarian assistance, and peacebuilding in Jonglei, Eastern, and Central Equatoria states; and CCR’s experience in strengthening the conflict management skills of civil society and state actors, facilitating sustained dialogues, and developing policy recommendations aimed at promoting more effective capacity-building and policymaking in South Sudan. The specific project outcomes to be achieved by this project are: (1)- Greater trust and tolerance between citizens and state institutions, and among previously conflicting or adversarial groups; (2) - Food security and livelihoods improved, and vulnerability to adversity reduced; (3) - Increased knowledge and skills among communities, civil society and local government structures to mitigate and resolve conflict without recourse to violence.

InfraCo Africa Ltd

Private Infrastructure Development Group

InfraCo Africa seeks to alleviate poverty by mobilising private sector expertise and financing to develop high-quality infrastructure projects in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides funding and expertise to infrastructure projects, enabling them to grow from an initial concept to a bankable investment opportunity to a viable operating business. InfraCo Africa can work with projects at their earliest stage, providing finance and oversight directly where the project already has an experienced lead developer, or supplementing skillsets by providing on-the-ground project development expertise through its own teams. InfraCo Africa can also provide equity to fund the construction of pioneering projects or for innovative infrastructure businesses that need to scale-up or demonstrate commercial viability to attract further investment. InfraCo Africa's involvement reduces the risks and costs associated with project development, ensures international standards are met, and facilitates private sector investment. In preparing this disclosure, we have included cashflow information on named projects for those projects which were live as at the date of publication only; cashflow information on other projects have been aggregated. Similarly, we have only shown outgoing commitments on projects currently live. For details of older projects, please see our financial statements. For some projects where disbursements took place over multiple years, the disbursements have been shown in 2020 for operational simplicity. Our financial statements are available on our website.

'REBRACOVID' - multicentre cohort study of the natural history and immunology of COVID-19 in Brazil

UK - Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

COVID-19 disease cohorts have been recruited and studied in many parts of the world in recent months, but there is still much to learn. There is a specific and urgent need to better understand this disease in Brazil: WHO data places Brazil 2nd in the world for COVID-19 cases and deaths, and the country faces challenges of urban crowding (including favelas), socioeconomic disparities, and a healthcare system stretched by disease burden including the mosquito-borne infections. Our aim here is to collect and analyse disease parameters in a large disease cohort of hospitalised and community cases, from 9 centres across the country. In doing so, we benefit also from building a consortium that bolts-on to our established consortium studies, REPLICK (Brazil) and SPIICA (Anglo-Brazil, MRC-Newton), designed to conduct analogous cohort studies in relation to the immunopathology and chronic disease phenotype in infection by Chikungunya virus - a mosquito-borne infection that can also lead to chronic disease symptoms. We aim to recruit a cohort of 20,000 total infected patients, as well as household contacts and at-risk healthcare workers. Our data will allow us to define impacts of age, gender, occupation, ethnicity, other health conditions, socio-economic factors, blood markers and importantly, measures of protective immunity and its durability. Our intention is to better understand susceptibility and mechanisms underlying this disease, drawing on specific insights from the serious situation in Brazil to impact local management of the response.
