Description

For the Rohingya population in Bangladesh, 2023 marks the sixth year since their mass displacement from Myanmar. While the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and the international community have maintained immediate provisions for lifesaving assistance, the needs are immense and complex challenges continue to emerge in the response. Hosting nearly one million Rohingya, Cox’s Bazar is the world's most significant refugee settlement, where refugees reside in 33 extremely congested camps. The lack of resources and opportunities in the camps has resulted in harmful coping mechanisms, including the Rohingya undertaking perilous boat journeys in search of a better future elsewhere. Through this project, IOM is improving the quality of lives and reducing the vulnerability of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar through a multi-sectoral response. IOM is contributing towards this goal through site management and site development activities; the provision of shelter and non-food items; enhancement of reporting mechanisms and increasing awareness on protection against sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), as well as strengthening the capacity of the Inter-Sector Coordination Group-PSEA; and provision of integrated healthcare support to communities through the non-governmental organization Friendship.
