Description

MRC AGHRB award to develop and trial a participatory intervention, to build on and support community health workers' (CHWs') "informal" use of personal mobile devices in their work in Ethiopia, Ghana and Malawi. A pre/post study design is used to assess acceptability, feasibility, costs and impacts of the intervention.

Objectives

1. To co-develop and trial a participatory intervention to support Community Health Workers' (CHWs') "informal" use of personal mobile devices in healthcare delivery in hard-to-reach rural settings in Ghana, Ethiopia and Malawi (2 sites per country). The intervention consists of three core elements: (a) Basic training on digital literacy and online safety, (b) Co-development of locally-relevant guidelines and training around responsible/effective use of personal mobile devices in community healthcare, (c) Financial compensation to CHWs of up to 5 USD/month towards phone use costs. 2. To collect data pre- and post-intervention, via questionnaires and focus group discussions with CHWs, services users, and local managers/supervisors, in order to assess: (a) Changes in CHWs' working practices (including frequency of phone usage, range of uses, expenditure, etc.) and cost implications, (b) Changes in CHWs' work-related wellbeing (to include items on burn-out and retention intentions), (c) Acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility of the intervention, from the perspectives of different end-users, (d) Potential causal pathways and mechanisms for any changes observed. 3. To work closely with Ministries of Health and other key stakeholders at national, regional and local levels (including CHWs and community representatives), to develop and implement pathways to national-level scale-up of successful elements of the intervention. 4. To provide guidelines for ethical and efficient/effective use of personal mobile phones to support healthcare delivery in other settings, especially in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. 5. To strengthen research capacity at collaborating institutions in the Global South, especially early-career researchers and women, who are currently under-represented.
