Co-DiRECT Nepal: a community-based diet programme for remission of type 2 diabetes and amelioration of non-communicable disease risks
Project disclaimer
Description
This award aims to evaluate a proven dietary intervention, for remission of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and reduction of chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) risks, culturally adapted for implementation in the context of rapidly-growing peri-urban populations in and around cities in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal.
Objectives
1. To establish medium/long-term effectiveness and effect sizes (T2D remissions) from a proven intervention, culturally adapted for the rapidly growing, underserved, city populations in Nepal, a new low- and middle-income country (LMIC) setting. 2. To record and evaluate participant and community experiences of T2D remission implementation, defining barriers, incentives and need for further cultural adaptions. 3. To explore and optimise the programme implementation about cultural context, local leadership, and the most appropriate approaches to evaluation and audit. 4. To seek opportunities for facilitation to improve implementation reach, scalability and sustainability, considering staff roles, knowledge, attitudes, and skills. 5. To prepare the ground for future programme expansion: policy, practice and public awareness about NCD risk factors 6. To understand wider sustainability considerations (e.g. food security, urbanisation, etc) 7. To co-create, with Nepali stakeholders, a novel evaluation-oriented framework suited to T2D remission implementation in LMIC urban community environments, as a conceptual project outcome.
