Description

Constraining future projections of wildfire and air quality in Brazil This project will bring together and analyse data on fire, climate, air pollution and human health to improve our understanding of the climate and human drivers of wildfire and poor air quality across Brazil. We will use new understanding gained from analysis of historical fires to help constrain future model projections of wildfire and air quality in Brazil. We will provide new evidence of how fire and land management alongside other mitigations could reduce exposure to poor air quality. We will work to develop UK-Brazil collaborations on wildfire and air quality and ensure outputs from the research inform policy and decision making in Brazil.

Objectives

Aim: To predict how wildfire in Brazil will change under future climate and land use scenarios. Research questions: 1) What are the dominant climate and human drivers of wildfire activity and resulting poor air quality in Brazil? What is the sensitivity of wildfire and air quality to these drivers? 2) How will wildfire and air quality change in the future in Brazil due to changing climate and land use? How well do climate models represent the observed relationships between climate, land use, fire and air quality? Can we improve future projections through combining models and observationally-constrained methods? 3) How can fire management and land use management be altered to reduce population exposure to wildfire smoke? What are the projected economic losses from wildfire under different scenarios?
