Description

The UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) funds outstanding global health research through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The NIHR Global Health Policy and Systems Research (Global HPSR) programme funds health policy and systems research that is directly and primarily of benefit to people in low and middle income countries (LMICs), and to improve access to appropriate and affordable health services aligned with the aims of Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3. The Global HPSR Consortia call supports broad ambitious programmes of health policy and systems research and capacity strengthening delivered through a consortium of partners. UK and LMIC universities and research institutes were invited to submit applications including two joint lead applicants, at least one of whom must be employed by a LMIC institution.

Objectives

To support broad ambitious programmes of health policy and systems research and capacity strengthening delivered through a consortium of partners which: 1) Include interrelated work packages involving applied research on health policy, services, or systems with a coherent theme. 2) Address priorities identified by and relevant to local stakeholders and policy makers, and deliver evidence and outcomes that will inform policy or change practice at local, regional and/or national levels, for example informing local, regional or national strategies. 3) Involve multidisciplinary teams to ensure that research objectives can be met. 4) Include an element of strengthening LMIC institutional capacity to undertake, manage and disseminate high-quality applied health research. 5) Strengthen research career pathways across LMIC partner institutions by including a minimum of three formal training posts for LMIC nationals. 6) Include appropriate project management and financial/administrative support. 7) Develop LMIC research leaders of the future through opportunities for developing leadership skills at all levels through effective mentoring and support. 8) Have clear and demonstrated institutional commitment and support for delivery of the research and for developing this field of research within the institution beyond the end of the award.
