Forest Governance, Markets and Climate (FGMC) Programme Extension - Programme Management
Project disclaimer
Description
The Forest Governance, Markets and Climate (FGMC) programme is the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) flagship global forestry initiative, with the broad aim of bringing about governance and market reforms that reduce the illegal use of forest resources and benefit poor people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. As part of global efforts to improve forest management and tackle deforestation, FGMC supports international policy processes which tackle illegal logging in timber-producing developing countries and the trade in illegally produced timber products. FGMC’s original business case, which ran from 2011 to 2020 with a total budget of £250 million funded from the UK’s International Climate Fund (ICF), has been granted an extension running from April 2021 to March 2023
Objectives
In summary, the programme is: 1. Supporting national platforms in producer countries to reform and strengthen forest sector governance, including securing rights, regulation and enforcement of national rules-based systems, improving transparency and accountability in the management of forests and land use (supply measures); 2. Promoting responsible business practices and demand for legal timber and other commodities such as palm oil in consumer markets (demand measures); and 3. Helping to shift global business norms to halt illegal timber imports by providing evidence and tools to support the legal timber trade; and 4. Applying lessons from the timber trade to inform policy on commodities such as rubber and palm oil that put forests at risk, supporting efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and informing international processes seeking to promote restoration of degraded lands and limit deforestation.
