Afghanistan Regional Preparedness
Description
On the 15th Aug 2021 the Taliban took effective control of Afghanistan. The situation in remains unstable and could rapidly deteriorate. Protection concerns, on-going conflict, lack of basic services, food insecurity and a deteriorating economy are all potential drivers of UNHCR estimates that the number of displaced will rise, both internally and across borders. A potential worst-case scenario envisages over 515,000 newly displaced refugees fleeing across the orders into the region. The programme will be in two phases - the first providing up to £10 million to international partners to support preparedness activities in targeted countries, including pre-positioning of essential life-saving supplies. A second phase provides up to £20 million to support a scale up support should there be large-scale movements into neighbouring countries. Support is provided on a no-regrets basis and is to ensure improved capacity in provision of protection and life-saving humanitarian assistance.
